1st Durbanville Turns 70: A Celebration Steeped in Heritage and Scouting Spirit
1st Durbanville marked its 70th anniversary this year with a vibrant celebration that brought together the full breadth of its Scouting family, from the tiniest Meerkat to the tallest Rover, along with proud parents, dedicated Scouters, and supporters from across the Western Cape Region.
Held on 5 December at the 1st Durbanville Scout Hall, the event drew over 160 attendees who gathered to honour the group’s legacy and ongoing impact. The highlight of the evening was a captivating address by veteran Scouter Ray Middleton, who took the audience on a nostalgic walk down memory lane. His reflections shed light on 1st Durbanville’s seventeen Tonkin Trophy wins and the group’s rich history, including the heritage status proudly held by several buildings on the grounds: a testament to the group’s longstanding presence and contribution to the community.
Equally inspiring was the message from Scout Group Leader Ryan Cox, who celebrated the group’s thriving membership across all four Scouting branches: Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, and Rovers. He reaffirmed the fact that 1st Durbanville not only honours its past but is also building a strong and dynamic future.
With decades of adventure behind them and many more still to come, 1st Durbanville’s 70th birthday was a salute to heritage, community, and the enduring spirit of Scouting.
