1st Durbanville Scouts Give 67 Minutes on Mandela Day

Liam Coetzee (age 17) and fellow scouts gave more than 67 minutes on 18 July when they worked together to realise a Jars of Hope initiative which formed part of his First Class community service project. They packed a total of 270 Jars of Hope which Liam donated to the Protea Valley Church for distribution to the homeless.

Every year on 18 July, Scouts across South Africa pay tribute to Nelson Mandela by giving at least 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day. This year, the 1st Durbanville scouts shone a light of hope through providing Jars of Hope. Seventeen jars of hope provide 67 meals!

As part of his First Class community service project, Liam gathered a team of scouts which met at the 1st Durbanville scout hall on 18 July where they packed no fewer than 270 jars of food which translates into 1080 meals. One jar feeds four people. Each jar contains one cup of rice, one cup of soup mix, one cup of lentils, one stock cube and one packet of soup powder. All jars are labelled to show the ingredients and cooking instructions.
